Tanya M. Peterson I believe in zoos and aquariums. This is not just because I am the Executive Director of the San Francisco Zoological Society or because my family and children love zoos. It is because I wholeheartedly believe in the San Francisco Zoo's mission to connect people with wildlife, inspire caring for nature and advance conservation action. More than 175 million people visit zoos and aquariums annually throughout the United States. This exposure prompts individuals to reconsider their role in the environment and take conservation action. And every time someone does, society moves a little closer to greatness. The San Francisco Zoo is home to a variety of endangered, threatened and non-endangered animals. I'm proud to say that we have the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in any accredited zoo or aquarium in the world. We also have a thriving outreach program where rescued animals are taken into schools across the Bay Area so children can learn about them and hear amazing stories that signify the need for good stewardship and conservation action. The Zoo recently gave a permanent home to Silent Knight and Henry, two California sea lions found blind and close to death due to inhumane actions against them. Coming in Fall 2012 we will open a new home for a group of squirrel monkeys that came to the Zoo from a non-invasive research project that lost funding. If not for the San Francisco Zoo, these and other animals most likely would not have made it through the circumstances in which they were found. The greatness about the San Francisco Zoo goes beyond the visual magnificence of the animals. I see it every day when wide-eyed children bombard their parents with questions such as: "Why is that flamingo pink?" or "What is an omnivore?". The true greatness comes when I hear a child ask, "What does endangered mean?". It is a child's first introduction to the plight these animals face and a step toward understanding conservation efforts and actions. Why does the San Francisco Zoo matter? This is easy for me to answer: * Zoos make a difference in the conservation knowledge and attitudes of visitors. * Visitors believe they experience a stronger connection to nature as a result of their visit. * Without zoos, many species of animals would be lost. Zoos across the world are constantly evolving and progressing. We respect and honor the high value the public places on us to teach and connect children with the natural world as well as care for its animals and wildlife. The San Francisco Zoo is an outdoor classroom that encourages adults and children to get up and be active. No television show or book can engage an individual or match the experience of seeing a wild animal up-close. This connection awakens an innate sense of caring and is where conservation begins. Every time you make a purchase from a national retail chain or locally-owned store within your neighborhood, one percent of the sales tax from your purchase remains local. These tax dollars help pay for police and fire protection, local health clinics, zoos and parks, emergency services and children's education. Valley Yellow Pages and CBS Outdoor have posted billboards in Central and Northern California reminding you to buy local. Over 800 billboards appear in Fresno, Madera, Tulare, Kings, and Yuba Counties; Monterey, Salinas, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Sacramento, Modesto, Stockton, Chico, Redding, Red Bluff, Yuba County, Lodi, Oakland, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and the entire San Francisco Bay Area. Instead of purchasing online or outside your community, make an effort to support your community and buy products locally. It will help your local economy and protect local jobs.
